WTN: Montes Alpha Syrah 2007

by Bruce Hayes » Fri Jan 08, 2010 9:37 am

Apalta Vineyard, Colchagua Valley

Very dark purple in the glass.

Smoky, tobacco, earthy, heavy roasted notes on the nose.

Quite tangy, very smoky and roasted, medium weight, juniper, chocolate, black cherry, red currants, vanilla, charred, smooth and full in the mouth.

With time, the wine became sharper, the charred notes became dominant and the 14.5 per cent alcohol started to make its presence known.

Chocolate, warming and velvety on the finish.

Once again, a good "half" bottle of wine. Recently I have had several bottles of red wine that started out good or even okay and progressively worsened through the course of the meal as the bottle sat on the table. Not sure what's going on here, but I don't like it.

Purchased on sale at $19.10 (Canadian).

Bruce
Yes if Montes have a failing in my eyes, it's clumsy overworking/oaking/ripening as they move up the range/price scale. I'd have no qualms about going for their cheap Cabernet Sauvignon or Sauvignon Blanc (the badly named reserve range) if I saw them in a restaurant.
