Thanks guys, I guess they are not that common.
I tasted my first last night - Boom Marlborough Sparkling Pinot Gris 2008 - and I really liked it - better than many of the sparkling sauvignon blancs that started to hit the shelves around here late last year. Most of those sparkling sauv blancs are one glass wines. This sparkling pinot gris was easily a three glass wine. An attractive aperitif style, am excellent party wine - so also comparable to those fun Cava styles you speak of Rogov.
This sparkling was carbonated because the guy who made it ran trials and the bottle ferment result was too yeasty and suppressed the 'delicate' pinot gris fruit. Surprisingly the bubbles are very fine, the wine is dry yet creamy with fruit sweetness, the flavours reminded me of vanilla poached pear more than anything else. Only available in NZ at the moment and hopefully Singapore once export clearance comes through. A good attempt.
Cheers,
Sue
