Has anyone tasted a sparkling pinot gris

by Sue Courtney » Wed Jan 06, 2010 9:35 pm

I'm going to pop open a bottle of NZ sparkling pinot gris later today and I wondered how common this wine style is around the world. A few examples come up in Google. Has anyone ever tasted a sparkling pinot gris? If so, what was it and how was it?

Cheers,
Sue

Not that I know of, but I've had many a delicious Pinot Blanc from Alsace (Cremant d'Alsace). Shouldn't be much different if well made. I'm mostly familiar with the Lucien-Albrecht Cremant, both Brut and Rose, and they are very nice. I'm sure some Pinot Gris winds up in the Alsacian sparklers.

Sue, Hi...

I've had several sparkling Pinot Gris wines, those mostly from Italy and all made by the charmat method. Comparable to fun Cava. Not to be taken too seriously but can be pleasant enough either as aperitifs or with meals based primarily on antipasti, pinchos or tapas.

Not exclusively, but Aubry makes a Champagne that includes some Pinot Gris.

Thanks guys, I guess they are not that common.
I tasted my first last night - Boom Marlborough Sparkling Pinot Gris 2008 - and I really liked it - better than many of the sparkling sauvignon blancs that started to hit the shelves around here late last year. Most of those sparkling sauv blancs are one glass wines. This sparkling pinot gris was easily a three glass wine. An attractive aperitif style, am excellent party wine - so also comparable to those fun Cava styles you speak of Rogov.

This sparkling was carbonated because the guy who made it ran trials and the bottle ferment result was too yeasty and suppressed the 'delicate' pinot gris fruit. Surprisingly the bubbles are very fine, the wine is dry yet creamy with fruit sweetness, the flavours reminded me of vanilla poached pear more than anything else. Only available in NZ at the moment and hopefully Singapore once export clearance comes through. A good attempt.

Cheers,
Sue
