Trivia: Where would you find this quote?

by Sue Courtney » Wed Jan 06, 2010 8:18 pm

"It is said that a toast is made to complete the cycle of the five senses
Sight, smell, taste, touch and the sound of wine glasses"

Have a go, even if you don't know.

Schoonmaker wrote an authoritative book on wine a long time ago (in a galaxy far, far away).

Schoonmaker wrote the definitive wine reference book last published around 1974. But the idea was carried on by Sharon and Ron Herbst with their Wine Lovers Companion and it is (IMO) the "if-you-can-have-only-one" wine book it's the best. Even has pronunciation and is my "go-to" reference. I think she died a few years ago. She also wrote the Food Lover's Companion that is also a good resource.

Schoonmaker was an importer back in the 50's, wrote The Encyclopedia of Wine, long time ago, Sue, before you were even a wee bairn... :D

I'm going to guess Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) or Benjamin Franklin.

I don't know if they made the original quote, but not my source.

Did it come before or after the 5 S’s wine tasting quote (See, Swirl, Smell, Savor, and Spit or Swallow)?

Now I'm really stumped! I was going to guess Rogov...next best guess was Robin, but you've squashed those, Sue. Are we narrowing it down to a European? :?

Julia, it came from a European source. I'm not sure who first said this quote, and where I saw it there was no attribute to anyone. So the question still remains, where would you find it? Think vinously.
