WTN: 2005 Bindi 'Composition' Chardonnay

by Jenise » Tue Jan 05, 2010 1:26 pm

This not-so-little wonder hails from Australia, and it's one of the most intense and concentrated chardonnays I've ever tasted. Deep, bright yellow in color. Power nose of minerals, apples and honeysuckle. Palate follows nose with firm and vibrant acidity. Unusual for such a huge wine, it actually needs food at this point (lobster with drawn butter would be a good experience), but should soften eventually into something very interesting and elegant--peak is probably five years out. Outstanding potential.

Jenise this is a highly regarded wine down here though sadly I have yet to track down a bottle. If you enjoyed it, you may wish to also try and track down its big brother the Quartz Chardonnay. This wine was also a good vintage so well done. The producer is seen as one of the the leading boutique producers in the country and from recollection is either biodynamic or organic.

Mark, thanks for that. I knew it had a strong, almost culty reputation down there and hence my purchase of it, but I had no idea there was a "big brother"--hard to imagine a wine like this having a relative bigger than it is.

You have me curious now. I will have to go and find some which would be a good change. At present I seem to be doing about 4 riesling to every other white.
