WTN: Sterling Cabernet Sauvignon 2006

by Bruce Hayes » Sat Jan 02, 2010 8:03 pm

Napa Valley.

Primarily Cabernet, but blended with small quantities of Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec.

A real "Jekyll and Hyde" wine: it started out great and then declined a bit more with each glass.

Dark purple in the glass.

Mint, black cherry, red currants on the nose.

Good weight in the mouth, black cherry, red currants, chocolate, good tangy acidity, cedar, red licorice, vanilla, roasted-charred notes, smoky, spicy.

At first, I was a little surprised at how tangy the wine was and what a realitvely lean structure it exhibited, but the wine itself was still rich and quite tasty. With time, the tangy edge increased and the fruit faded and appeared to be almost cooked. Not nice.

At its best, the finish was mouthwatering, with mint and berry fruit.

Purchased on sale at $22.95 (Canadian).

Funnily, right before you posted this I also posted a note on this wine (New year's Day). I only had it on opening, but my impressions are pretty close to your initial impressions. Didn't taste later.
