So, I went wine shopping last night

by Howie Hart » Sun Aug 20, 2006 6:54 am

I went to one of the stores that Ed Draves works for (Premier) for the purpose of betting something for MOCOOL and bought a few extras, to kind of get a handle on some of the wines other people here drink. Here's what I bought - any comments?
Kim Crawford '05 Sauvignon Blanc - $16 -This has received good reviews here, but I trying this because a while ago I had 2002 Nobilo Sauvignon Blanc - Marlborough and wasn't impressed, so I guess I'm still trying to see what all the SB hype is about.
01' DeBeuf - Jean Descombes Morgan - $15 -I was actually looking for Drouhin, but they didn't have anything. Carl posted the '02 version of this as his bargain of the year.
'04 Lysardiere Chinon - $12 - I have been wanting to try Chinon for a while, but they're hard to find. Since I make Cab Franc from Ontario grapes, I need a benchmark. The last time I was there (several months ago) they only had one selection and it was an '03, which I didn't want to go with. This time they had one other besides this (forgot the details) but the wine lady who helped me find it said Loire was one her specialties and that wine was thin and light colored for a Chinon.
'02 Deinhard Beeren Auslese 375ml - $9 for 2 bottles - At this price, how could I not try this. After just perusing the lable the grape variety is not listed - hmmmm. Maybe I'll bring one to MOCOOL.
For MOCOOL I bought:
1990 Mumm's Cordon Rouge Champagne Brut - $50
'05 Johnson Estate Vidal Ice Wine 375ml - $35 - I was hoping to get a bottle of their Delaware Ice Wine, but apparently its only available at the winery. :(
I will, of course, post TNs as I work my way through these. I'm thinking of having the Morgan with coq au vin - a big dinner and will probably taste it with a few other Gamays, but probably not until September (local hybrid wine tasting today - MOCOOL next weekend) so I guess I missed the August Wine Focus.

I just love shopping like that!! We have been tasting the KC over on Netscape this month and, being biased, loved it but a few say there is better out there. Thats your palate buddy!!
I have only just now posted my impressions on the 04 Drouhin Morgon (here on Wine Focus) where we are tasting gamay all month. Drink up and post there!! Hope it is better than mine(hiccup). You can always buy another bottle if you like yours!!

*** I was looking at the Duboeuf Moulin-a-vent Prestige label yesterday($29 Cdn) but have 2 other bollyjolly`s to try before the end of the month.

Actually I could have posted the same comment about the Morgan that I did with the Chinon, in that may will also be a benchmark. I have the Ch. des Charmes Gamay Droit, Stratus Gamay and my home made with grapes from Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ont., which I hope to have with the coq au vin (invite a few friends over to help me out). :)
