Continuing the good times, we had some nice wines with a dinner prepared by some friends

1993 Moët & Chandon Champagne Cuvée Dom Pérignon - France, Champagne (12/28/2009)
Good stuff. Probably drinking at peak maturity. Nice secondary flavors of butterscotch and brioche. All the components are there, albeit in a softer package. The flavors are not as bright as better vintages, nonetheless this is a nice wine. Drink up.

2007 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett - Germany, Nahe (12/28/2009)
Opened this bottle on Sat night for a slow O2. Although I didn't taste it then, the wine had to benefit as the flavors really burst. This is a great Kabinett. Showing very nice notes of citrus and hints of stone fruit with a touch of sweetness. The tell tale verbena, herb note emerges. Crisp acidity and well balanced. Finishes quite well and long. Loved this.

2008 Domaine des Terres Dorées (Jean-Paul Brun) Beaujolais Blanc - France, Burgundy, Beaujolais (12/28/2009)
This is a really nice value white. Showing nice citrus and pear flavors with plenty of acidic lift. Slightly short on the finish, but nothing to really complain about. This is easily one of the best Chardonnays for the price year in and year out.

Disclaimer: This wine is on our wine list.

1995 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru (12/28/2009)
Ah, unmistakable aromas of the CdN. Color is showing some slightly orange rim. Nice complex savory flavors of red fruits, sois bois, smoke and baking spice. Pure velvety mouth feel with somewhat resolved tannins. Finishes with good length and lingering flavors. So good. I love when somewhat off vintages perform. It goes to show you, that genius vignerones can make great wine in not so great vintages.

2004 Kosta Browne Pinot Noir Kanzler Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast (12/28/2009)
Popped and poured this for an easy to like wine for some non-wine geeks. They were amazed by this wine, while it left me wondering if the wine will ever develop beyond it's primary flavors while still maintaining some structure. Sure this is a good wine, but right now it's no 98 point wine.
Regards,
Gregg

Good set of wines Gregg.

The Donnhoff Leistenberg has been getting more interesting the last several years. I was never much of a fan (even of the 2001), but more recent vintages have won me back.

As for 1995 - it's structured to say the least, but I would not consider it any kind of an off year for Burgundy. Unless of course your yardstick is always 2005 (which is also quite structured).

Hi David - '95 is a mid grade vintage in my experience. Not horrible and not great generally speaking. Rousseau happened to succeed in '95.

Gregg
