WTN: Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel 2007 + Xmas Day & Arniston Bay

by Peter May » Mon Dec 28, 2009 10:27 am

Picnic on Xmas day on the white sands of Arniston Bay, near the southern tip of Africa, by Indian ocean's warm turquoise sea with a bottle of Simonsig Kaapse Vonkel 2007 Methode Cape Classique champenoise sparkler. Kaapse Vonkel means Cape Sparkle.

Temperature was in high 20s celcius but I'd chilled the fizz in the fridge and transported it in a polystyrene container so it was still cool when it came to drink.

Made from 58% Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with 2% Pinot Meunier in the classic Methode Champenoise (Simonsig were the first in S Africa to make sparkling wines this way). Yeasty nose, hint of pink in colour, intense minute bubble streams, deep delightful toasty and dry. And very refreshing on hot day. Delightful with a Christmas mince pie. :)
