WTN: 2008 Nobilo Icon Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

by Paul B. » Fri Dec 25, 2009 5:00 pm

13.5% alc./vol. Screwtop.

Amazing aromatic punch comprising citrus, tropical fruits (guava, pineapple, passionfruit, etc.) and strong tomato-stalk/-leaf green-vegetal aromatics. Lovely Sauvignon nose with great power. Strong acidity on the entry, good and dry, but with - unfortunately - a lot of alcoholic heat and burn coming in on the mid-palate already. It's a lovely smelling wine, but quite overpoweringly alcoholic on the palate ... even when well chilled (which mutes the aromatics).

It'd have been really great had the alcohol been down a couple of notches. That said, it seems to be in best balance when drunk at cool temperature, not chilled.

Merry Christmas!

Great to see you Paul!

I had the '07 Icon back in January. While Sauvignon is not my thing it was almost a very well made wine except for that same flaw you cite: excess alcohol.
