WTN: '01 Donnhoff Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett

2001 Donnhoff Oberhauser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett
I've followed this wine from release, and contend that it has never been better than it was the day it hit our shores. It has changed, but is it better? IMO it is not. There's some great things about it, notably the depth of minerals and acid balance, but there's little fruit left, and to my palate it is not as interesting as it was on release when it had fruit. A case of aging not bringing more to the party. People who did not have this wine young might be thrilled by it, but to me it is a shadow of its former self.

Unlike us, who keep improving with age. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you and Laura!

At least you got some pleasure out of the bottle. And, I guess you now know that you don't need to age future vintages of this wine?

David,
I'll take a contrary view, while certainly realizing your experience with and love of Donnhoff wines.

My first taste was at the 12/02 German Wine Society meeting, and my notes say I liked it best of a very good flight. I've had 4 or 5 bottles since, all of which I appreciated more. The last time was 10/09, and it was drinking great. I made note to finish them up over the next 2 or 3 years and appreciate the reminder to do just that. Obviously it's a matter of taste, and your note details the pros and cons of the evolution in a most useful way that will serve as a guide to others.

That said, my next purchase of the wine was the 2007, and perhaps I'll check in on it soon.

Happy Holidays to you and to Laura,
Charles
