We cracked these last night w/ the pork chops:
1. EdmundsStJohn Viognier PasoRobles RozetVnyd (13.9%) 2003: Med.gold color; slight smokey/pungent some earthy/minerally bit gunflint/WWII beacon/ozone rather pear/Viog/slight peachy very slight toasted hazelnuts quite interesting nose; tart/tangy bit waxy/figgy/old Semillon slight pear/Viog/peach somewhat earthy/minerally slight tangy/metallic interesting flavor; med.long tangy/metallic slight toasted hazelnuts light pear/Viog/peach complex/earthy/minerally finish; certainly would not be mistaken for a Condrieu and unlikely to be mistaken for a Calif Viognier; a very interesting wine more like an older Rhone Marsanne than a Calif Viog; develops much more pear/Viog character and more lushness overnight in the btl and warmer temperature; those who worship at the altar of varietal typicity will not like this wine, those who worship at the altar of good drinking/interesting wine might like it. $11.50

2. CLWines SonomaCoast Syrah (14.5%; www.CLWines.com) DavidLattin/KendraCraven/StHelena 2006: Very dark color; stunning cracked black pepper/black olive strong smokey/pungent/Rhonish/espresso rather blackberry/Syrah cold-climate Syrah complex nose; tart strong blackberry/Syrah/green olive very cracked pepper/Rhonish/espresso light toasty/oak complex/beautiful flavor; very long blackberry/Syrah/cold-climate/black olive black pepper/Rhonish/roasted/pungent complex finish w/ modest tannins; maybe could use another yr or two. A terrific cold-climate Syrah at a ridiculous price. $11.00

And a wee BloodyPulpit:
1.EdStJViog: This wine was one of the $hitload (Kansas colloquialism for "a lot") that we bought in SteveEdmunds white sale over a yr ago. The wines is rather atypical of Calif Viog. It is not at all atypical for a SteveEdmunds wine...tasty/different and well-priced.

2. CLSyrah: A had recently ordered several cases from K&L, and this was one of the unknown wines I took a flyer on. I was blown away by this wine...especially at the price. DavidLattin left AcaciaWineCllrs in '98 to start CLWines with his wife Kendra, an enologist. Alas, their WebSite appears to be down or non-existent, so little more info than that. But a wnry I'm going to be checking out.
Not sure where the grapes came from for this wine, only that it's the southern SonomaCoast. This, and the flavor profile, suggests it comes from the Eastern PetalumaGap area. Perhaps the OldLakesideRd vnyd of the Sangiacomo's??
The wine had much the same character as the Cline Cool-Climate Syrah, but much more structure and interest. It reminded me more of the VIE LasMadres Syrah, but a bit lighter in character. Whatever...a stunning wine at an unbelievable price.
