Daniel,

I'm curious as to how you are able to taste a wine like the 2005 DRC La Tache? The local wine shop has one 750 ml bottle of that wine for $4,000. That price is just a bit beyond my means. In fact, if that wine was discounted by 90%, it would still be beyond my means. I know that wine tasting is your profession, but how can working Joe's like me taste such a wine?

Sam, Hello.....

The price is beyond my personal means as well and I can comfortably assure you that have not 12, not 6 and not even a single bottle of this particular wine in my personal cellar. Wine and restaurant critics rarely earn huge sums but we do drink and dine well so we have few complaints. Fortunately, those of us who have survived long enough have publishers who pay our way to such events.

Sometimes tastings such as the one in question at which each of the Domaine's releases for the year were tasted, are done by a national importer or distributor, sometimes at the winery, not infrequently at major wine exhibitions (e.g. VinItaly, VinExpo, etc), sometimes at a wine shop tasting (for a fee). And sometimes because we receive invitations from wealthy acquaintances/readers who are not in the wine trade but who can afford such wines and enjoy sharing them not only in their youth but as they mature.

Thank you for the reply, Daniel. I regularly imagine what it would be like to taste a four figure bottle of wine. I'm not sure that I would be able to critique it fairly since I would want to like the wine so badly. It seems that I will need to get a publisher, or a wealthy acquaintance to find out. Unfortunately, I don't have anything to publish, and I don't know anyone with La Tache caliber money. Looks like Gallo Hearty Burgundy for me. :)
