WTN: Nice, mature Chianti

by Saina » Sun Dec 13, 2009 3:55 pm

Having wasted four hours at an abysmal performance of Chekhov's Platonov, we decided to open up something a bit older and more "special" than our usual fare. Gladly this bottle and our quick risotto more than made up for the over-long, overacted performance with too much shouting and strange waterworks and other strange stage effects. I like Chekhov - maybe my favourite Russian author and playwright - but this was a horrible performance.

Caparsa Chianti Classico Riserva Doccio a Matteo 1997 - 39,80€; 13% abv; 100% Sangiovese. Recent vintages of this see 16 months in Barrique, but the '97 was in bigger casks.

The scent is quite lovely with much cherry and some darker fruit. It smells mature with some nice earthy and leathery aromas. Though the fruit is ripe it never seems fat and flabby like so many other '97s I have had. The palate still has such refreshing tannins and so much of them that I think this will keep for quite some time - especially as the fruit and acidity are all so harmoniously integrated to each other. Tangy finish. Shows no adverse effects from the hot year or the oak. Very nice, mature wine. Drink and hold.
I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.

Hi Otto,

Thanks for the note on Paolos wines.

There is a funny story about the DeM label. Paolo was sitting with a friend making the new label and they talked about where is should say DeM on the label, and Paolos friend was writing it different places on the labels, that is why it says DeM so many times on the label..

Paolos wines are also organic.

We stayed there in 2006 in Paolos former agriturismo that is now his home.

A photo for you of Paolo and some friends of mine:

Glad to see a '97 holding up so well. I still have a few, and will relax about immediate consumption.

Apart from Castell'in Villa (IIRC) and this, all others I have had have seemed like it was time to drink them up a while back. Sadly, my experiences with too many Nebbiolos are similar. I wonder why there was such hype about this year?

Well, I think it is because in those "old times", before global warming was regarded as a reality by most people, a warmer year was still regarded as a blessing not a curse.

Cheers,

Otto
I've just started reading Nicholas Belfrage's new Tuscany & Central Italy book. FWIW he still have 1997 showing as a 5 star vintage. His only other 5 star vintages are 1990 and 2004.

Approximations of course and maybe in the detail there are winners, losers and stylistic differences 8)

regards
