I'm in love I'm in love I'm in love

... with a great new wine!

New to me anyway.
Down on the bottom shelf of the slot allotted to Spanish wines at BevMo was a bottle of Rueda. As I try to always buy at least one wine that I know nothing whatever about, and I wanted some white (this was Rueda blanco), and it was $10.99, I bought it.

Night before last I was cooking some chicken with lemon, garlic and white wine and poking around on my spreadsheet I noticed "Las Brisas Rueda 07" and said, "What the h-e-double-toothpicks!" (Not wanting to alarm any elderly maidens who might have been nearby.)

My note: Good Wine!!! Tart, spicy, flavorful, light texture, really good and excellent value! I want more. 12.5% alcohol

I rushed right down and bought one of the last two bottles on the shelf, for cracked Dungeness crab on Sunday.

(What's in Rueda, anyway?)

The last one I had was a Verdeho (grape variety.) I will post a note in the next few minutes.

Verdejo is indeed the main variery in Rueda, but Las Brisas has (per VS) a slug of SB in it and that's what I taste in it. There may also be some Viura in it, as that's also permitted in Rueda DOC.

John,

I picked up a bottle of Rueda at the local Payless Liquors on the recommendation of the clerk. It was probably the exact wine that you had (yellowish label) at the same price. I was quite impressed. We drank it with baked chicken. I plan to grab another bottle tomorrow.

My wine spend per bottle is way down this year, thanks to the economy, but I have been very happy with the quality of <$20 wines that we have been drinking.

SB and Verdejo sounds right for the taste, if verdejo is a more aromatic variety. Isn't Verdejo also grown in Portugal and spelled a bit differently? Something like verdelho?
Yes, it's a white and yellow label, very attractive.

Bodegas Naia is a very nice, pretty Rueda that can be found for under $10 if you look around. It is one of my top white qprs.

Bodegas Naia -- I could say, "I'll keep it in mind," but that presumes that my mind is somewhere to keep something. Actually, it's more like a beer glass - in the working position, there's a hole in the bottom. :D
