Very short notes from last week's lunch with Lester and Jojo at Masseto.

Astrolabe Sauvignon Blanc 2008 - From New Zealand. Strong green pepper and good fruit. Nice interplay of sweet fruit and savory grassy/pepper elements. Good stuff.

Clos Marguerite Sauvignon Blanc 2008 - Minerally, stony. Very French in style. A pity this was opened after the more opulent Astrolabe as this was overwhelmed by the fruit of the former.

Ned Pinot Gris 2008 - I've enjoyed Ned Sauv Blancs many times before and was pleased to see they have Pinot Gris as well. Gentle sweetness. A rather light style of Pinot Gris. Pleasant, if a little simple.

Solea Amador County Syrah - Appears to be an NV or at least none of us could find any vintage on the bottle. A little oaky. Sweet and rich. By itself, not too interesting but very good with food, which subdued the oak.

Il Gioiello Amador County Petite Sirah 2005 - Dark, toffee, chocolate, dried herbs. Rich, spicy, lush but with firm tannins on the finish. Very good.

Peregrine Central Otago Pinot Noir 2007 - Candy and strawberry, touch of leather. Lovely nose. Just slightly green. Good.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.
