WTN: 1997 Sassicaia

by Diane (Long Island) » Mon Dec 07, 2009 11:53 am

Little did I expect, when I invited my friends over for pizza last night, they would bring this bottle. It was a real treat, and a complete surprise from a couple that drinks almost exclusively California wines, and mainly Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Lovely and gentle with a subtle perfume of spice and herbs. The palate showed the telltale acidity of a wine from Italy, or I would have guessed a California cab with some age. The palate showed nice, ripe fruit as it caressed the mouth, and the tannins, while noticeable, did not detract nor interfere with the pleasure. A wine that whispered its presence.

I have to find better pizza-loving friends. The last time I hosted a pizza get-together, my friends brought Aussie fruit bombs.

Glad you enjoyed the 97 Sassicaia. I had it once during a local all-Sassicaia tasting last year and it was one of my favorites.
