WTN: Weekend wines, two from New Zealand

by Tom N. » Sun Dec 06, 2009 8:43 pm

A Sauvignon blanc and Pinot noir

Sunday wine
Clear medium ruby red. Expressive nose of earthy cherries and spice, notably cinnamon. Spicy tart cherries, refreshing acidity and tingly tannins on the midpalate, with some peppery notes. Medium finish of sparkly red fruit with a nice tannic twinge at the end.

With food: Nice match with slow roasted pork shoulder. Brings out the earthiness in the wine.

Saturday wine

Pale yellow. Complex and expressive nose of freshly mown grass, ripe melon and lemons. Delightful midpalate of honeydew melons, sweet tropical fruit especially lime and pineapple, grassy notes and palate cleansing acidity. Nice medium long finish of fresh mown hay and steely acidity.

With food: Wonderful match with fresh haddock broiled with a lemon-dill sauce. The dill and the grassy notes just marry beautifully in the midpalate.

Wines revealed:

Sunday wine: 2008 Spy Valley pinot noir, Marlborough 14% abv. $19.95 $CAN I bought two bottles and I think I made a good purchase.

Saturday wine: 2008 Astrolabe sauvignon blanc, Marlborough 13.5% abv. $19.95 $CAN
I liked this wine enough to buy two more bottles today.

Good sense is not common.
