WTN: Oberweseler Dornfelder Rotwein Halbtrocken

by april yap » Sun Dec 06, 2009 4:04 am

my brother recently came from germany and shared with us a Goswin Lambrich Oberweseler Dornfelder Rotwein Halbtrocken which he was very proud to do so as he visited the vineyard (although he isn't into wine at all). as i understand it, Oberwesel is the location of the vineyards, near the Rhine and Dornfelder is the grape variety. my sister, who spent a lot of time in germany let us know that halbtrocken means half-dry, so i took this to be a semi-sweet wine.

at first nothing much on the nose, but after a few minutes, it was unmistakeably berry. strawberries, cranberries, and even some blueberry. it was, indeed, semi-sweet and on the palate tasted close to a berry-flavored syrup (although not that sugary). not exactly my thing, even for drinking on its own. and i'd like to ask the experts here what would such a wine go best with.

i saved some for a custard dessert and it did seem to have a better showing there, but now overall, i'm a bit wary of this sort of sweetness

What kind of custard? I love drinking sweet white wines (especially riesling and chenin) with custard but would not have thought of red wine. But then I guess the sugar in this made it more plausible.

well, a regular sweet egg custard - with a hint of coconut.

i agree, it was the sweetness of the wine that made it passable. making dessert in fact the only food on the table i could find to go with it (although to be fair, lunch that day had very strong asian flavors).

makes me rather curious now to try a dornfelder that isn't semi-sweet...
