WTN: The Goatfather 2008

by Bruce Hayes » Sat Dec 05, 2009 2:59 pm

Fairview/Charles Back
WO Coastal Region

A blend of Sangiovese (54 per cent), Barbera (28) and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Dark red in the glass.

Brett (band aid/antiseptic), roasted, smoky, spicy on the nose.

Medium weight, quite tangy and very drying, leather, band aid/antiseptic notes, sour cherries, raspberry, heavily charred, spicy, smoky.

Mouthwatering and drying on the finish.

Very disappointing, despite positive reviews by local critics. I know that some people dismiss the "Goat" wines as a gimmick and I suppose they are but, IMHO, they also offer good drinking wines at good value. The regular Goats Do Roam white and red have long been a staple in our house and the recent Goats Do Roam in Villages was an incredible wine.

I suspect this is likely an example of lot or bottle variation, given the incredibly large quantities that are produced. Here in Ontario alone, the LCBO purchased 1,200 cases of this.

Screwcap closure.

Purchased at $13.95 (Canadian).

Bruce, I have never cared for any of the "goat" wines. You have liked some? Maybe I will try some the next time they are offered. I have too often found SA wines to be wanting. They just fall into the easy coat of NA category for me. I doubt we will ever get the good ones shipped here.

Hi Bruce,

I just bought one Goat Father just to try it. Thanks for the tasting note. I will try to remember to post a note on mine when I taste it to see whether it is bottle variation or just not that good. I like Goats do Roam red myself. Nice GSM for a reasonable price, most of the time.

I tried Goatfather about a year back. Seemed OK to me. The one I didn't like was the Bored Doe.
