WTN: Many Spanish wines

Notes from last Tuesday's lunch at La Tienda.

Mas Donis Rose 2006 - A rather dark rose. Cherry. Very dry. Touch of oxidation evident.

Freixenet Reserva Real Brut Cava NV - Light gold. Very fine mousse. Cafe au lait. Just a hint of oxidative character which I rather enjoy in my bubbly. Good fruit and depth of flavor. Bready, refreshing. Excellent cava.

Bodegas Hidalgo Sherry Pastrana Manzanilla Pasada - Dry, nutty, appetizing. A little salty. Impressive length. Great value.

Naia Rueda Verdejo 2008 - Green pepper, fruity. Very Sauv Blanc - like. Not bad.

Marufuji Winery Rubaiyat Koshu Barrel Aged 2007 - The only non-Spanish wine we had. Light and dry. Very refreshing and easy.

Protos Gran Reserva 1990 - Dried herbs. Sweet. Remarkably fresh for a wine close to 20 years old. Firm finish. Very good and at peak now.

Prado Enea Muga 2001 - Sweet fruit. Medium-bodied. Slight barnyard. Vibrant. Very good.

Mauro VS 2004 - Deep purple. Rich chocolate. Raspberry. Modern, sweet, oaky. International style. Good wine but needs time to express itself.

Valdubon Honoris 2005 - Smoky, meaty, deep, tannic, sweetish. Needs a few years.

Dominio de Atauta 2005 - Sweet, toffee, thick. Very tannic. Modern. Good but needs major aging.

Don PX 1982 Gran Reserva Toro Albala - Black, olive rim. Nutty, toffee, extremely rich, thick, orange rind. Very complex. Loved this.
Three be the things I shall never attain:
Envy, content, and sufficient champagne.
