I've never smelled gunpowder but matchsticks sound like sulfur. Although everyone talks about flint in Pouilly Fume coming from the soil.

Actually Oswaldo, you are both correct. The match does contain red phosphorus (less dangerous (more stable) than white) and a mixture of potassium chlorate, sulfur and binder as the fuel. An interesting read here http://www.popsci.com/node/3935
