2007 Cono Sur Viognier Reserva Valle de Colchagua 13.5%
Under screwcap (hooray). Strong gunpowder/flint over white flowers. Nice and fresh, surprisingly high acidity, hard to tell to what extent natural, and a pleasing light bitterness. The sweetness has a candied touch and the finish is short, but the gunpowder, like recently lit matchsticks, kept drawing me in, and in, and into the flame.

Is that not sulfur?

I've never smelled gunpowder but matchsticks sound like sulfur. Although everyone talks about flint in Pouilly Fume coming from the soil.

I think matchsticks are phosphorus and I associate flint with old fashioned cigarette lighters. Perhaps I am conflating two sensory experiences tied to lighting something (though I've never smoked).

Actually Oswaldo, you are both correct. The match does contain red phosphorus (less dangerous (more stable) than white) and a mixture of potassium chlorate, sulfur and binder as the fuel. An interesting read here http://www.popsci.com/node/3935

Thanks! White phosphorous being evil is cute.
