2001 Moccagatta Barbaresco Bric Balin 14,5%
Quick on the heels of the previous night's 2004 Bric Balin, last night we tried the 2001. Nose was muted, suggestive of slumber. Some cherry and tar, with leather emerging over time. Before food, tannins tasted greener and more astringent, and the acidity also seemed higher. But I would bet that the acidity is similar to 2004; it only appears higher because some of the primary fruit has faded. On the other hand, unlike the 2004, there is no perceptible oak here, a blessing in this guise. Alcohol so well integrated that it tastes more like 13%. After food, the tannins and acidity come into balance and this starts cruising as a young and balanced Nebbiolo. Very fine and pleasurable with food, excellent QPR (all things considered) and well worth cellaring.
"I went on a rigorous diet that eliminated alcohol, fat and sugar. In two weeks, I lost 14 days." Tim Maia, Brazilian singer-songwriter.
