Questions for Thanksgiving Dinner Wines

by Doug Surplus » Wed Nov 25, 2009 12:20 am

1. Would the St Innocent 2005 Anden and 2005 Shea Pinot Noir be considered young enough to still benefit/require decanting? If so, how long do you recommend?

2. The Pinot Gris wines I've had from St Innocent are richer than most and I'm thinking one might make a good white to go with Thanksgiving dinner? Yea or Nay?
Or should I just go with Reisling?

Dinner will consist of turkey with cornbread stuffing cooked on with charcoal (Weber grill), mashed potatoes, roasted yams, grilled asparagus and green bean casserole (one of my daughter's contributions), mixed green salad and the family-traditional cranberry-orange relish.

I don't think you could pick two better wines than those listed under No. 1.

Oregon PG is very flexible. It'll go great with the feast.

Sounds like perfect wines to serve with the meal. I would decant the '05s. Heck, I am possibly opening an '02 St. Innocent Shea Vineyard Pinot Noir, and considering decanting that.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody. If I told what we were drinking you'd think we were insane; which we probably are.

Carl,

Happy Thanksgiving to you. I wouldn't worry too much about what other poeple think of your wine choices.

I'm with the others on the St. Inno's. As for decanting, I don't think an 05 neccessarily needs it, but it would probably benefit from a short airing. No harm in starting out in the decanter about four hours before dinner, tasting the wine at that time then checking after an hour. Depending on what you think of it's progress at that point, either leave for another hour or return the wine to the bottles and cork them until service. This method leaves all your options open.

Thanks all. I'll be decanting the 05 Shea, probably per Jenise's suggestion. Doesn't look like I'll need the Anden, unless the wine drinkers go nuts.
