WTN: Three from Zeltingen

2008 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Himmelreich Riesling Spätlese "Anrecht"
Fantastic once again; packed with youthful apple, citrus fruit and peach flavours over a bed of minerals, with really good acidity giving it a sense of incredible brightness and energy in the mouth. Great balance and very light on its feet - I love this wine, and I'm glad I have more as this is stunning value at under $25, and hard to go wrong with under a screcap.

2008 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling "Rotlay"
This picks up where the 'Anrecht' left off but with a lot more intensity and power across the board. The fruit feels even riper and richer here (while still feeling incredibly fresh and precise) with some exotic floral and spicy elements also emerging with some air, the slatey minerality is even more intense and the finish is absurd - just a wave of slate and floral elements that keeps going and going. Amazing wine, probably my favourite from '08 so far.

2006 Joh. Jos. Prum Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese
AP #14-07 for those who keep score. Opened several hours ahead of time to let the sulfur clear, and this is a really remarkable wine as this shows none of the heavy richness or botrytis I've seen in almost every higher-pradikat bottling in 06; instead the bright pineapple/other tropical fruit flavours come across as incredibly light and precise with faint touches of honey and flowers adding complexity, and an intense slatey mineral character underneath. There's a bright acid spine here that balances the sweetness very well and keeps it very elegant and light, to the point that it's shockingly food friendly for an '06 Auslese (and matches very well with some spicy chorizo).

You are running through the Anrecht as quite a pace.

Thatnks for the other notes as well, since I have not yet gotten around to the Rotlay, and have not revisited the Prum in 2 years. 2006 seems like a vintage that will always have something to show due to the ripeness & botrytis.

So what is your take - is the Rotlay more a spatlese or an auslese. With no pradikat we have to decide for ourselves!

Given how tasty and refreshing it is and the pricing, can you blame me? :) (My dad also took another bottle back with him - that was a huge hit.)

The Rotlay's more in line with a modern Spätlese, not as sweet/rich as it has been in other years.

So a classical auslese then. :D

Glad you opened it several hours ahead, but, really, opening a Prüm Auslese that is THREE years old, where is the world coming to?

FYI - a 3/4 full bottle of Anrecht held up very well for three days in the fridge. Defied my expectations.

Fredrik - I didn't feel like waiting another 25 years until it would have been 'ready'. Plus I was also curious to see how Prum's Zeltinger Sonnenuhr might contrast with a Selbach wine from the same vineyard. (Besides, nothing wrong with enjoying it young and older!)

David - I'm not too surprised it held up. What does shock me is that you only managed to get through 25% of it after opening!

It was the 4th bottle opened at the time.
