WTN: Nice old riesling birthday wine

by Tom N. » Mon Nov 16, 2009 10:52 pm

Light golden yellow. Primarily petrol with some ripe melons and a hint of citrus on the nose. Luscious petrol, sweet apricot/melons, and mouthwatering acidity on the midpalate. Nice long finish of ripe persimmons and tingly/slightly grippy red grapefruit.

With food: wonderful match with chicken swiss (white meat chicken pieces in a mushroom white wine sauce ladled over thick pieces of french bread with melted swiss cheese on top). The wine just goes on and on with the chicken swiss with sweet fruit and petrol layers.
This wine is a good example of a mature riesling that has developed secondary petrol characteristics that add layers of fllavor to the wine at all stages of enjoyment 8) .

Wine: Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt 1998 Kaesler Nies'Chen riesling kabinett 8.5% abv

I love the way the '98s are drinking right now. Even the auslese level wines are pretty much ready to drink, and the kabinett/spatlese wines are very, very good right now.

Hi David,

I agree. One thing I forgot to mention about this wine is that it a really nice sipper. I finishing it off right now as I write this and even though it is at room temp (17 C at my house) it is still smooth and flavorful. Riesling is just the best white wine for my palate and German rieslings are the best in my opinion.
