2004 Clos du Val, Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon

by AlexR » Sun Nov 15, 2009 11:46 am

I drink too few California wines...

So, when I saw this wine for 20 euros at the local Auchan supermarket, and knowing its reputation, I jumped at the opportunity.

I served it blind to my better half, who is no slouch when it comes to tasting. She thought it was a 2003 right bank Bordeaux, which is a very honorable guess in light of the wine's richness and elegance.

We both remarked on the breastless 3 graces on the label.

In fact, at 20 euros, this 2004 Clos du Val can hold its own with Bordeaux in a similar price bracket on upward.

The oak was discreet, and the fruit very much under control. At 13.5% alc./vol., it was in balance.
Furthermore, it is in a very good place now, no need to age it further.

Not a great wine by any means, but unquestionably a very good one.

I see that Bernard Portet is not longer winemaker (if fact, I am *way* behind the times: John Clews replaced him 10 years ago..).

Is Clos du Val's restrained stye atypical?

Also: is the price I paid under market value?

Best regards,
Alex R.

Alex:

Clos du Val's restrained style is (in my opinion) atypical of recent Napa Cabernets; when I first started drinking Napa Cabs in the late 70's, it was more within the fold. Because of this (its "restrained" and elegant structure) the price and general reputation of Clos du Val has stagnated.

Here in the Chicago area, one can find Clos du Val's regular (non-reserve) Cabernet from about $20 to $27, so the price you paid in Euros seems to be comparable.

It's really interesting to hear a Bordelais perspective on what remains one of my favorite wineries. 2004 was even a somewhat "hot" year, so retaining restraint merits a hat tip. Their reserve wines do age quite well...a 1998 Reserve was actually quite stunning.
