WTN: Paul Hobb's Cabernet Sauvignon 2005

by Jay Labrador » Sun Nov 15, 2009 10:37 am

I dropped by Jojo' store Sunday to take advantage of the sale and was lucky enough to run into The Man himself. Naturally he had an open bottle and so I got a mre than generous portion of this wine.

I'm not sure how long this was open but it was pretty soft. Oaky nose. Cocoa powder and chocolate with cherries and cream. Rich. Lots of sweet spices like cinnamon and nutmeg. Quite sweet. Coffee on the finish.

I'm not a fan of the Hobbs style of wine but this is probably more drinkable than any of the other wines I've tried; notably the one from Argentina.

What was your impression of the Argentine Hobbs wine? We had a bottle this summer and it was so black and tannic that it was not very pleasant. Not a fruit bomb at all.

It's been a while since I've had the Argentina line but I recall it being ashy and with burnt fruit character. Very over the top and tiring to drink.

Hmmm... Tiring to drink....sounds like a good description! :?

I have liked a couple of other Hobbs wines, though. A 2001 Laird Family Rutherford Cabernet was frankly delicious, and he made a Merlot under his own label that was hedonistic and lush yet somehow delicious.
