WTN: Superb Schmitt

2008 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg "Schmitt", 8% alcohol and made this time without any pradikat designation.
I opened this with high expectations given the quality of the '07 Schmitt from Selbach, and a wow experience with the '08 Anrecht a couple of weeks ago. Like most of Selbach-Oster's wines, this delivers. This isn't quite as vivid or electric as the Anrecht, it's calmer and more understated but has the same sense of incredible refreshment and elegance and offers classic Mosel pear, apple and citrus fruit flavours over a base of slate and minerals. Over a couple of hours this unravels and shows many more dimensions with herbal, floral and faintly smoky nuances emerging, finishing long and refreshing. Fantastic wine.
