WTN: Has anybody seen the Brücke?

by David M. Bueker » Fri Nov 13, 2009 10:08 pm

1999 Donnhoff Oberhauser Brucke Riesling Spatlese
This started out at cellar temperature, which was a bit too warm, accenting the softness of the '99 vintage. Gave it a little chill & perked up, with still vibrant fruit, emerging petrol notes, lots of extract & both a finishing bitter edge and back end acidity to give it structure. This is no shrinking violet, and at 10 years of age still has remarkable freshness. This will have no problem reaching 20 years of age or more, but I think it's getting close to peak now.

I am jealous. :)

The few 99 Donnhoffs I've been able to try have been gorgeous, and the Hermannshohle Spatlese a few months ago was in a great place with a really great combination of primary and developed flavours. Not surprising to hear about the Brucke being so awesome (but then again, when is it not?)

I have a couple of those, and a couple of halves of the Auslese, and also 1999 Emrich-Schonleber Spat from Monziger Fruhl and Aus from Monz Halenberg.
Time for a Southern New England German Wine Society meeting?

Happy to arrange something. Been way to busy to do much advance scheduling, but a 10 years after (or 11 if it's in 2010) of 1999 could be nice.

Hell yeah! If not, a New England Boston/CT-area Austrian-and-Duck Society meeting may be in order. ;)

David - you opened that without Laura? But glad to hear there's more where that came from!

Now that you mention it, 99 was not too shabby in Austria...

we had a line up of Dönnhoff Spätlesen in the summer, and Brücke 97 was my favorite Brücke, and one of my favorte wines. Try it some time.

The last time I had the '97 Brucke spatlese was in May 2005 with David Schildknecht. It was fabulous then, and I am certain it is fabulous now. Maybe I should open one of my precious few bottles.
