WTN: CHARBONO! and a nice Napa Syrah.

by Brian K Miller » Fri Nov 13, 2009 1:07 pm

Purchased three years or so ago at the tasting room in Calistoga

2003 On The Edge Winery Charbono (Frediani Vineyard).

My first Charbono. From Calistoga, this was a big, somewhat tannic wine three years ago. The tannins have now smoothed out. I am pretty brett sensitive, and there is a definite "old world funkyness" to this wine -which I enjoyed quite a bit (May be sensitive, but I like a little funk). Very fine grained tannins right now. This is not a fruit bomb at all, but there is lovely cherry fruit and a very distinctive "Italian-ish" bitter tobacco tone which made the wine very interesting and delicious. I was gratified by how many other people at the local wine bar enjoyed it! Awesome wine, and well worth holding onto for the three years or so.

2004 Sequoia Grove "Stagecoach Vineyard" Syrah. Another nice wine. Nose was very savory and meaty. Palate was more about the anise fruit, with a hint of the meatyness. I often find that I enjoy sniffing Syrah even more than drinking it. Weird, I know. There was an interesting tomato leaf note to the taste as well...something I've noticed in a couple of other favored Napa Syrahs (Havens, for one). A very nice wine, but the Charbono was what caught our attention this evening.

Brian, if you like Charbono (and I agree it can be wonderful wine) look for Spann Vineyards Charbono. Small winery up in the Mayacamas Range. Don't know where they sell it retail, but they have a website.

They make only a small amount. From a Napa vineyard. Great stuff too.

Cool, Hoke. I will look them up. The manager at V Wine Cellars in Yountville also made a Charbono under the Thomas Michael label. I don't remember it being as rich or powerful as this Calistoga wine...he makes pretty restrained wines, overall, so...

In using the power of Google, the On The Edge winery is associated with Coach Dick Vermeil! Not a football fan, but even I recognize that name.

Hoke, Spann wines are some of my faves from California and I didn't know they made a Charbono. I'll have to dig some of that up! I can definitely recommend Spann's MoJo and MoZin, awesome drinking.

As I recall, their first vintage they made all of 50 or so cases, Jon. Don't know what they have now.

Glad to hear you like the wines...if you get a shot, they also have a Betsy's "Backacher", which we love. It's from their home vineyard. (Betsy is the winemaker of the duo.)
