White Port?

Back in the days, while going to school, I worked at a wine store that I thought sold white port. Does this exist? Is it considered drinkable and are there any examples of fine white port? I guess I never hear of it any longer.

White port is definitely still produced. I get the impression that most people don't have a high opinion of white port, but there is one outstanding example I've had: Ramos Pinto Lagrima. $15 or less, outstanding value.

White Port is still being made. I've bought it from local supermarkets in southern New Hampshire. White Port and ginger ale makes a very nice aperitif.

Sure, seeing a lot of white port around here. Croft featured at a port tasting downtown last night. Me, I was at the rodeo but think some will be available tomorrow at a big Portugal tasting at DeVines.

White port makes a great cocktail with tonic water. Muddle some mint leaves in a tumbler, add ice, then pour in port and tonic (one part port to two parts tonic). My wife and I got carried away with these one hot summer evening.

It's too bad that is is not well regarded. When I was in Porto, They served it neat or as part of a cocktail (really with a little lemon with a little sprizter water) that was very nice. When it is newly bottled, the port is very fresh and rather dry. Very very nice. I suspect though that is really does not have much of a shelf life as that freshness goes away. I've broguth bottles of the stuff back from Porto and within 6 months it goes away.

Great to see you and the family today Mike at DeVines. In fact I tried the white port from Portal and found it quite enjoyable. With freshly mixed fruit cocktail, it would be a winner. I will try your method next summer for sure!

My six cents: White Port remains popular primarily among working-class French families (they buy some 80% of it) and they tend to use it as a mixer.

Just about every port producer still makes white port - it is somewhat more popular in Portugal than in N. America. There are dry, semi-dry and sweet styles (with the sweetest known as Lagrima = tears of Christ), but it is usually inexpenisve, with pricing at the level of ruby/basic tawny. There are also very special whites like the 1952 Dalva Coheita which I had a chance to taste in Porto - very exotic and complex. Many of the port lodges in Vila Nova de Gaia will include a white in their tastings.
