WTN: 2007 Chave Cotes-du-Rhone Mon Coeur

by Oswaldo Costa » Thu Nov 12, 2009 5:30 am

2007 J.L. Chave Cotes-du-Rhone Mon Coeur 14.0%
Provides bargain basement access to the Chave's stellar reputation. When I pulled the cork, out popped at least 20ml of wine, so this must have been bottled in quite some vacuum. Nice aromas of sour cherry, leather and light funk. Faint traces of reduction. Good acidity but a bit thin. Improved with food, but never quite made it to the sweet spot category. Chave or no Chave, heart or no heart, in my book this is a Pass. Maybe I am being harsh, but I think the dude should stick to his own grapes and leave the negociant business to those with less reputation to preserve (I am assuming this is negociant because the label says "Elevé et mis en bouteille par J.L. Chave Selection"). What, he doesn't make enough money from his regular wines? What, he read Marx and thinks that capital accumulation is compulsory under capitalism? Gimme a break! :D

How does the saying go? "The problem with socialism is socialism. The problem with capitalism is capitalists."

Is the Offerus St. Joseph also a negociant wine? I think that might be better than this CdR.

I totally agree. The Offerus is a great value.

I think a blind man could make a good '07 CdR. I cannot remember a better vintage, at least to my taste. I have tried about 15-20 and bought 8-10 different ones. I have to stop because what I have been buying is in the $12 to $25 range and probably won't last forever. Every time I go down to the cellar for a wine I seem to come up with an '07 from the south of France. I have been a fan of '05, '06 and now '07 but think the '07 is by far the best. It has the structure of '05 and the approachability of '06

Nice rant! But I totally disagree. I thought the 2007 Mon Coeur was delicious. I Couldn't notice any reduction or "thin-ness." I thought the fruit was delicious and the structure was fine. I put it above the other two or three 2007 CdRs I have tasted, and better than most other CdR vintages.

Interesting, I have noticed that you and I rarely agree on wines (we do agree on a lot of other things :D).

Like efficient markets?

Seriously, it distresses me a wee bit to disagree with the palate of someone so, well, distinguished (you're also much older than me, so you've had more time to develop discrimination  ), so I think it might be fun some day to get together and describe to each other exactly what we are tasting to see if it's more or less the same things but we just have different preferences, or if we're actually perceiving different things.

Did your Mon Coeur also leap out the bottle like mine or was it less happy to see you?

Oh, so now I'm old on top of everything

My Mon Coeur did not jump out of the bottle, if it was happy to escape, it showed it in a more civilized manner. BTW, I bought six bottles of the stuff and drank three so far, all were similar. I'm happy to open another bottle with you next time you're in town.

JL Chave's Offerus label, i believe, is sourced from 10 or so domaines in the Saint Joseph appellation. I remember having had both 2004 versions of Mon Coeur and the Offerus. Purchased at just a tad higher pricing than the Mon Coeur, at just under $20, I thought then that the Offerus was the better wine. It is claimed that Chave himself has a supervisory capacity in the vineyard management of the Offerus domaines.

However, while we may agree that Offerus is better than Mon Coeur, does anyone regularly buy Offerus and find it better than other St Joseph? I can't say I do.

Better than Chave estate? No. Better than Gonon? No. Better than Faurie? No. Gaillard, Faury? Hmmmm, maybe. Better than most St Jo? Maybe/probably not. I've generally found the Chave Offerus to be a bit variable, but better than average. Tonight's http://cinderellawine.com offer (Wine Library's woot/till sold out arm) is the 06 Offerus at $16.xx. With free shipping for 3 bottles, I bit .
