Spied this over the weekend, so cracked it last night w/ my tofu souffle:

Groom BushBlock Zinfandel BarossaVlly (14.7%) 2008: Very dark color; definite menthol/eucalyptus some Am.oak/vanilla strong blackberry/boysenberry attractive nose; soft/fat lush blackberry/boysenberry/jammy/plummy some vanilla/Am.oak bit menthol/eucalyptus slight tannic/hard flavor; long lush/ripe boysenberry/blackberry/plummy some Am.oak/vanilla menthol/eucalyptus finish; needs several yrs; more loke Oz Shiraz than Zin. $24.50

1. This wine is, of course, from DarylGroom, former winemaker at Penfolds yrs ago and more recently of GeyserPeak. Now making Oz wines under his own label. You don't see a whole lot of Zin from Oz, so was interested in trying it.
The wine was a pretty tasty example of Oz red. Spoke more of Shiraz than Zin, though. Lots of blackberry character but lacked the high-toned raspberry notes that Zin often shows. A bit in the soupy/d'Arenberg style I'd say. Good/solid Oz red and at a fair price for what'tis.
