WTN: One Night (dining) in Vegas

by David M. Bueker » Sat Oct 31, 2009 7:28 pm

Laura and I just got back from a week hiking (and canyoneering) in Zion and Bryce National Parks. We flew in and out of Vegas, so a dinner stop at Lotus of Siam was mandatory. The food is as good as advertised, in other words fantastic. The drunken noodles with sea bass knocked me over. The crispy rice with sour sausage was another treat. Their wine list is also very well chosen, and I didn't even get past the German Riesling section.

2004 Emrich Schonleber Monzinger Fruhlingspatchen Riesling Spatlese
I asked for this to be decanted as it was a touch grumpy about being opened. Some air brought out lots of tropical fruit as well as a very filigree structure. It's a lovely wine that is just starting to enter a second phase of life, and worked fabulously well with my noodles (though less so with Laura's beef dish, but that was to be expected). The ringing endorsement is that Laura drank half the bottle on her own!

And just to get things started, here's a photo from our day of canyoneering. This is at the bottom of a 100' rappel into a slot canyon.

Sounds like lots of good stuff. I've had a couple of 2004 Donnhoff spatleses this weekend that were not grumpy at all. But I can see how they are just beginning a new period.

Lotus of Siam..Man I miss their food! Probably one of the best Thai food in these parts.

Great photo; looks like you two had a great time.

Schonleber is a fantastic producer, I wish I saw his wines around more often - but every wine I've had from him has been really excellent.

Salil,

I will be exercising my contacts to get some Schonleber. Laura even gave the go-ahead.

Been to Lotus once. And in spite of the fact that we were made very welcome with our top-end Austrian riesling and it generated a nice conversation with our host, I was rather ashamed when he started pouring us (gratis) wines from bottles he had open. Clearly, they know and care about wine in a way one does not normally expect in Asian restaurants.

What was sad is that we were the only table in the place with a bottle of wine. Weird, as the list is not only well chosen, but it is not overpriced.

I've seen the LoS wine list, and have been stunned at the depth of great German wines. It is first on my list of places to visit if I am ever in that part of the country.

Meanwhile, I just got three bottles of the 04 Fruhlingsplatzchen. :D

David
I could imagine it woud be quite a culture shock arriving in Vegas after a week's hiking. From the peace & tranquillity, to the bright lights and buzz of Vegas.

Vegas is not real. At least that is what I kept telling myself.

David,
I love Lotus but I love Zion more.
Great pic. from a place that, as far as I am concerned, is as close to Eden as I'll ever see.
Best, Jim

Thanks JC & Jim.

Just an FYI that I have started to post some pics of the trip in the Friends & Fun forum here.

Jane - They can be made into postcards. I do an annual calendar.

Jim - I had been pestering the wife to go back to Yosemite, but Zion may have stolen a piece of my heart.

David,
If you're a fan of slot canyons, there is really quite a wonderful collection of them in BLM land around the Four Corners area. As much as I adore Zion (especially Angels' Landing and the Virgin River Narrows) those untrammeled trails in Escalante Natl Monument leading into slot canyons are amazing. And the rock formation known as The Wave, on BLM land in AZ, is also spectacular.

Mark,

Thanks for the info. We are planning to go back again in the not to distant future to do some exploring around Escalante and other areas. The canyon we explored was not actually in Zion, but rather in the Dixie National Forest near Toquerville/La Verkin. There's so much around to explore that you could spend a life time there and only see part of it.

My wife and I have been backpacking out there several times. If you didn't do it this time, I highly recommend a drive down Hole-in-the-Wall road. In the summer time the Zion Narrow hike is well worth doing, as well.
