Tasting group names?

by Jenise » Fri Oct 30, 2009 7:14 pm

Would love to hear about the clever names some of you have come up with for your wine tasting group(s). A good list might help a local group who I will be tasting with from time to time who haven't come up with a name yet. There are no clever angles here--it's all guys except me, and all are ITB. The tastings are held at a home on one York Street in case that provides any inspiration.

Ones that stick in my mind are the Blacktongues in Australia and the WIMPS in UK (the latter a wine & dining group - I forget exactly what it stands for, but the WIM is "Wine in moderation", which was a minor reaction to offlines where each participant turn up with 2-3 bottles and it can all end up a little 'tired and emotional' if not careful. Hence they aim for 1 bottle per person.

 Ideas
W@YS or WAYS (Winetasting at York Street)
York Street irregulars

The other thought would be to think about your collective personalities. Is there a particular ethos that runs through the group? e.g. there's a constant desire to try new and/or weird stuff, or maybe there's a healthy new world / old world rivalry?

For the former: The Wine Explorers (or just The Explorers)
For the latter: One world wine tasting group

My more serious Westchester/CT group is called SOBER: Several Oenophiles Being Extremely Rambunctious. I confess I get a slight kick out of thought of people peeking at my calendar and thinking "wow, he puts it on calendar when he's going to be sober!" I like the name better than its predecessor, TWITS (Tristate Winos something).

My more local "boys night out" group has discussed names. As we're in Dobbs Ferry and have members from US, France, Belgium, & Germany, someone suggested Dobbs Wine International. But DWI is even worse that SOBER to put on calendar. We also considered DooWop (Dobbs> Oenophiles Organization- Without Our Partners), WINE (Wine Is Not Everything), and RATS (Rivertown Amateur Tasting Society). At least one person in my city mostly Bordeaux group referred to us as the OenoFools.

Personally, I like the acronymic ones.

I like that! In the same vein but reverse direction, another group I'm in is The Grand Crew.

I cannot say I have ever been part of a tasting group that had a nickname, but I like Kim and Geo's name for their group which is "Gang of Pour". 8)

I dont belong to any tasting groups but once, when visiting Hawaii was invited to join a group of tasters in Oahu. The name of their group: The Wicky-Wacky Wine Wankers. Despite their rather silly name, a quite sophisticated and most pleasant group.

David, agreed that 'Gang of Pour' is one of the best group names ever. Trouble is, it's so distinctive one can't even borrow it! Both sentiments apply to Dale's group, SOBER, too. Which causes me to remember that 'Grand Crew' wasn't my own idea either, but one I borrowed from Robert Noecker. It was a group he knew of had been in, but at least no one posted on this board under that name so it seemed up for grabs.

Lots of great suggestions. I like Ian's idea of incorporating York into it somehow. The Old Yorkers?

Our small tasting group (4 persons) is called "The Grand Crew" because of our primary leaning towards Bdx.

Jay Labrador has a larger group that he calls "The Usual Suspects" that I've been joining the past year. We are all members of a local wine BB (Wines & Spirits Club Philippines, or "WSCP", the first of its kind in Manila) where some others have been joining in "outside sessions" - this group I mentally refer to as the WSCP-SWAT (for Special Wines And Tastings).

As regards amusing names for wine groups, I am aware of a fun-loving group of mainly expat Aussies and Brits in Manila that call their wine group "CRAFT" - which stands for "Can't Remember a F***ing Thing).

Hi Jenise,
You being the only female in the bunch should also be incorporated, I think. How about “One Wine Diva and the Yorkies”?

I was going to suggest Yorkies. Or York Uncorked. Or Wine Not?

York Cork Dorks? Too corny, huh. :)

Seriously though, everyone's come up with some great suggestions. I'll make a list and read it to the boys.

Never had the need/urge to name everythng. Why not just call it 'the wine group'? They'll know what it refers to.

Guess I am missing the gene that seems to make people apply cute names to their boats, clubs, cars, parts of their bodies.....I barely name my dogs. As long as I only have one, 'the dog' suffices (I get over ruled by women - what else is new - on the dog thing).

a couple of my group names:

The Worthless Palates http://theworthlesspalates.blogspot.com/2008/03/garys-overload.html.. one of our tastings, in my backyard.

The Vineyard Lunch Gang http://thevineyardlunchgang.blogspot.com/.. the name is because we meet in the office of Vineyard music, which has nothing at all to do with wine, but rather is a Christian music label/distributor (that's Jason Hagen's gig)

NWA (No Women Allowed), not the other NWA.. a group of 4-5 of us guys who meet about every 5 weeks or so to open special stuff that we want to linger over (typically older Bordeaux or Burgundy, SQN, Alban, etc.).. usually at a restaurant with zero corkage (and we have quite a few like that), since we usually have 9-10 bottles on the table.. along with the artichoke, string fries, red meat and all the fixin's
Cheers, Jim
