One from last week, a couple over the weekend and two opened tonight with a friend following a shopping trip to start loading up on the 08 Germans.
2001 Reichsgraf von Kesselstatt Scharzhofberger Riesling Spätlese (Saar)
$25, bought a few weeks ago from Hart Davis Hart. AP #32-02. Bright white fruits, apples, and hints of honey over a base of slate and chalky mineral notes. Softer in the mouth than I'd expect with moderate acidity and a medium length finish. Tasty but not particularly interesting.
2002 Weingut Spreitzer Oestricher Lenchen Riesling Kabinett (Rheingau)
Fabulous stuff; bright pear, apple and citrus fruit flavours over layers of minerals and floral notes, very light, elegant and precise with bright acidity and a long finish. Ridiculously good value; purchased this for $11 on a closeout and it's one of the best deals I've found in ages.
2006 Zind-Humbrecht Riesling Heimbourg (Alsace)
Starts out very overripe and tropical on the nose with bananas, pineapple, apricot and some citrus rind aromas. Initially quite awkward on the palate with tart citrus/grapefruit flavours dominating and the alcohol (14%) sticking out quite a bit, but this calms down and integrates a little with a few hours of air as the fruit flavours and alcohol come into more balance, and a stony mineral character emerges underneath. While it becomes more pleasurable with time, it's still a little hot and too over the top/overripe for my liking.
2008 AJ Adam Dhron Hofberg Riesling Kabinett (Mosel)
Fantastic; bright apple and pear fruit flavours layered with flowers, minerals and faintly yeasty, leesy notes. Very light, elegant and gentle in the mouth with bright acidity, great balance and a long finish. Wow.
2008 Hexamer Meddersheimer Rheingrafenberg Riesling Spätlese ** (Nahe)
This is stunning! Explosive aromatics of flowers, apple, mandarin orange, spices and minerals, tremendous in the mouth with serious depth and intensity of flavour and yet incredibly light - almost weightless - with fantastic acidity, balance and length. Under $30, under screwcap as well and for quality this is up there with any of the other big Nahe names - I need to buy more of this.
