1992 Zind-Humbrecht Tokay Pinot Gris Rangen de Thann Clos St

A recent discussion touted the combination of Alsace Pinot Gris and Peking Duck (or in a pinch Cantonese Roast Duck, which I went for), so I pulled out this bottle. The cork was soaked through so it may have suffered some heat damage somewhere along the line. Still the color was a bright, clear golden yellow with no signs of premature aging. The nose was subtle and seductive--honeysuckle, apricot and peach. On the tongue fruits and spice. Very dry. Elegantly smooth with Egg Drop Soup; electric and vibrant with the duck. A long finish which turned just a bit sour at the end.

An interesting experiment, but the unexpected result was the way this bottle resonated with the soup.

Thanks for the note Dan. Sounds like it went well with the food, and glad to hear it was still drinking well (I opened two bottles of the 92 PG Clos Windsbuhl in the past year - the first was brilliant, the second was nowhere near as good and seemed to be fading).

I'll have to try opening a ZH with a Chinese egg soup one of these days - I've found I generally like the results of pairing those wines with richer Indian or Chinese dishes.

Salil,

Dawn thought the soup toned down some of the acidity. This was bone dry and I usually like a little rs with the richer/spicier dishes. Fun trying some of the older ZHs(this was a tame 13.6%), but can be risky. A '93 ZH Riesling from last year was shot.
