WTN: Anrecht. WOW!

by Salil » Fri Oct 23, 2009 7:44 pm

(I apologise in advance if my praise hits Jon Rimmerman-like proportions, but this is freaking amazing.)

2008 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Himmelreich Riesling Spatlese "Anrecht", costs less than $25, under screwcap to boot.

Johannes Selbach absolutely belted it out of the park with this one. Packed with primary bright fruits ranging from green apples and limes to riper peachy and pineapple flavours, layers of slate and flowers underneath and a sense of energy and dynamicism that reminds me of the "Schmitt" Spatlese that Selbach produced last vintage. Perfect balance with plenty of acidity keeping it very light on its feet, and a ridiculously long finish - five minutes after my last sip the lime and apple flavours are still lingering. Spectacular!

Sounds great. I was planning a visit to Table and Vine tomorrow and had debated some of the S-O wines but this may push me over the edge!

However, they list an 08 S-O "Arnecht" for $48. Is that a different wine Do you have a half-bottle?

I have a full bottle.
I am surprised at the price - I just looked at their website and saw that they show the Schmitt and Rotlay for a lower price than the Anrecht (which is surprising, given that I'd expect both to be a bit higher given past track records and reviews).

That's quite a big price discrepancy ($25-48). Maybe their website has a typo.

I guess you didn't buy yours from T&V?

I was also surprised at prices for Schmitt and Rotlay because I think those have been more expensive in past vintages. But in the past they were Auslese and it looks like they were Spatlese for 08. Who knows! Not I.

Schmitt was a Spatlese in 2007, but Table and Vine had it for $33. I am a bit surprised they had it for more in 08 (given that the Euro effect was also significantly less and 08 pricing has generally been a bit lower than 07).

That said I believe those are typos - as per the Theise catalogue, the Schmitt and Rotlay in 08 are being bottled without any pradikat designation.

They are not typos. I think someone screwed up in the distribution chain getting to T&V. Anrecht was $21 in Jersey where I bought it.

Wow. Sorry to hear that. At least for the T&V folks. Sounds like you got a nice wine.

So Salil mentioned this wine Th. Fri I had a low tire, put in some air. Fri evening I saw Salil's note (though not ensuing price discussion). Sat AM tire is flat. As I was already planning on buying 4 in couple month, changed and went to tire store in Scarsdale. Hour and a half wait, so I walked the mile to Zachys. Saw wine, remembered note, bought 2 at $21.xx. Kismet!

Actually, since I had a Zachy's coupon for $25 off $100 order, it was less than that (got a few other things too, harder walking back to tire store than before!)
