WTN: sweet Alsatian Gewurztraminer V.T.

by Jim Grow » Fri Oct 23, 2009 7:10 pm

I open this Pierre Sparr 1998 Gewurztraminer Mambourg tonight with Chinese. I was hoping for a semi-dry full bodied wine but was given a sweet (8-10 % R.S.) wine that was excellent for what it was, a dessert wine. Color was deep straw color and nose and palate were full of spicey pear and some lychee flavors. Acidity was slightly lacking but that may be nit-picking. I don't know if Sparr now uses an index to indicate sweetness, but I have had some V.T. Alsatians that were much dryer that this one. Still for $22 in Ann Arbor I feel I got a great deal! Lots of tartrate crystals present.
