WTN: Cooked Muscadet, iffy Nigl, great Aussie

by Salil » Wed Oct 21, 2009 11:04 pm

2007 Domaine de la Pépière (Marc Ollivier) Muscadet de Sèvre-et-Maine Sur Lie
Clearly an off bottle (heat damaged, or perhaps the plastic cork gremlin?) - tastes like stale/cooked apple juice. Ugh.

2007 Nigl Grüner Veltliner Privat
Starts out with intense floral, white pepper and green fruited aromatics, very rich and creamy on the palate with tremendous intensity and power - but with air this starts to go downhill as a honeyed botrytis element takes over and dominates all other aspects of the wine, and the alcohol (13.5%) becomes more prominent. Very enjoyable at first, but tiring to drink after a couple of glasses. Quite disappointing considering the price/reputation.

2000 Cullen Diana Madeline Cabernet-Merlot
Phenomenal. Decanted several hours in advance of dinner, and this was only getting better by the time we finished the bottle. Incredibly complex and very well balanced with layers of leather, tobacco, forestal earthy notes and floral elements around a core of black cherries and currants, with grainy tannins and bright acids underneath giving it lift.

I think I had the same wine back in April. My note: Very ripe very fruity, sort of tropical, Ok but not wonderful for me. Lots of aroma.

Apple juice would be a descriptor for a worse bottle. Cost me $15.99 at BevMo, and that's a lot of money for what I got. I remember thinking I shouldn't bother with another.

Well $15.99 is a lot of money for the regular Pepiere considering the Briords can be had for less. The regular blew out at $11.99 around me.

Sorry to hear about the Pepiere. People need to realize that these wines are precious and deserve the most careful treatment!

The Nigl also sounds weird. More like 2006 than 2007. Has anyone else tasted it?

Ta for the note on the Cullen - my odd year out as I have 98, 99 and 01. I fear it will now be nearer £40-£50 a bottle in UK.

Just starting to get the itch to try the 98, perhaps aided by mixed reviews on the web.

I'm also surprised by the Nigl comments, as the 2007 vintage is a great vintage usually, and doesn't normally have overripeness or botrytis issues, like the 2006 can. And 13.5 is pretty reasonable - but 14 or over I definitely noticed a lot of alcohol on some Austrian producer wines, even the best ones. Bummer!

I don't think plastic corks are intended to hold for more than about 18 months. I wouldn't age them.

Aha! Respected Muscadet producer uses plastic corks, therefore Muscadet is not meant to age!

Just kidding, but it felt good.

If you were kidding, does that not make it a non-sequitur?

Ah, so only one Muscadet is meant to age?
