Arneis recommendations, anyone?

by Jon Peterson » Wed Oct 21, 2009 11:41 am

I am not very familiar with this grape. Does anyone know of wines that are both good examples and widely available?

Bruno Giacosa, as Dan notes, is the benchmark Arneis.

I've also enjoyed Giovanni Almondo, Gianolio, and Ceretto, but Giacosa rules,.

Hard to find but yeah, Giacosa. Love the Ceretto too. Oregon producer Ponzi makes a good one also, as does Seghesio in Healdsburg.

Hi Jon,

The only Arneis I have tried, I really liked and it was produced by Seghesio, in Sonoma. I tasted it at the winery. I am not sure if it is available anywhere else.

Here is my tasting note on that wine:
Seghesio Arneis 2008

Pale yellow. Expressive nose of pineapple and ripe honeydew melon. Bright ripe paw-paw fruit (sort of banana-pineapple for those who have never tasted the native paw-paws) with nice refreshing acidity. A medium finish of fresh apricots. Really nice expression of an Italian wine variety that I had never tried before. I was tempted to buy it had I not just broken the budget at Ferrari-Carano.

another vote for Ceretto and Seghesio..Have never been able to taste or buy the Giacosa, hard to find.
In response to Tom's comments re availability of the Seghesio, I initially tasted their Arneis while visiting Seghesio in Healdsburg..subsequently ordered 2 cases via my local wine guy..Distributor, here in NY at least, is Winebow.

I've liked Seghesio Arneis. I don't think they distribute it, but you might be able to get it direct. I haven't had any since the '04 vintage, though, when the prices got over $20 and out of my range.
I found a bottle of Vietti '07 Arneis this summer at Beltramo's in Menlo Park, and I liked it. Beltramo's isn't where you go for bargains, and this cost $18.99. Here's my note:
Very pleasant! Fresh lemon acidity with a dose of something like apple or starfruit, and a nice helping of spice. Easy on the tongue and medium length. Lemon yellow color. A good wine and not overpriced. The next day, acidity receded a bit and spice came forward with a bit of melon.

Are you sure? I thought all the Enoteca Regionals were cooperatives and Davide's restaurant simply rents space in one...

Hi Oswaldo,

Yes 100%, been there 5 times now. Davide sister, Ivana Palluda, works in the Enoteca.

Some photos for you:

Great! I'll be in Piedmont from November 1 to 8 and will surely have dinner there.

Hi Oswaldo,

You need to make an reservation if you shall have dinner there in the evening. Tell Palluda family that you know me

If you need any help visiting some producer, let me know and I can help you.

In Barolo there is a special event on Friday the 6. of November, look here:

"A DINNER WITH BAROLO DI BAROLO… IN BAROLO FRIDAY 6th, 13th AND 20th NOVEMBER Three nights with Barolo, the King of Wines

A gourmand and intriguing trip through the Barolos produced in the "capital" town of the King of Wines. This is what the second edition of "A cena con il Barolo di Barolo a Barolo"

will offer in the next month of November. On Friday 6th, 13th and 20th twenty-seven producers from Barolo will propose their DOCG wines.

Twentysix Barolo producers will be the stars and six restaurants in Barolo will be the set of this event: Locanda nel Borgo Antico, Ristorante Brezza, Osteria La Cantinella, Ristorante La Cantinetta, Osteria RossoBarolo, Foresteria Sebaste.

During the first two nights the wines of 13 different producers will be offered at your appreciation. Each restaurant will propose a fixed menu, in which the most typical dishes of the Langhe will pair these precious wines.

On the third night the Barolos of all 26 producers will match a king of the Piedmontese cuisine: the Gran Bollito Misto. To help a personal evaluation of the wines, every guest will be provided with a report card, also available in a "blind" version: in this case the names of the wines will be revealed only at the end of the dinner, so that your tasting won't be influenced.

A complimentary technical file of the 2005 vintage and a map of all the crus of Barolo will also be provided.

"The aim of this event – says the president of the municipal tourist board Italo Cabutto – is many-sided. The first goal being the promotion of the public image of the town of Barolo to connoisseurs and newbies. We strongly suggest a walk through the village of Barolo, a land of great wines, prestigious restaurants, but also rich in hidden spots and gorgeous landscapes, where you’ll be able to taste the simplicity of the peaceful countryside. Furthermore, each night will be a unique occasion to taste Barolo in the place where this amazing wine was born and also a good reason to experience (or re-experience) some restaurants that are celebrated well outside Barolo’s boundary".

Reservations at the restaurants"

I agree with Giacosa and Almondo, both of Almondo's bottlings are excellent. I bring in Marco Porello's 'Camestri' which I think is worth a glass...

The name of Davide's restaurant is a bit misleading, I showed up there once for dinner with producers very underdressed, thinking it was a wine bar. Excellent food in a beautiful room.

I recall really enjoying Tre Donne Arneis many years ago. No tasting notes, however. -- Clark

Hi Oliver,

This is how Davide´s restaurant looks like now. You know some on the photo from eBob, Charles Morgan among others  From our trip in April with the people from the UK Forum
