Long Island Wine Shops

Any recommendations for wine shops in the Oyster Bay, Huntington, Syosset area? That's my old stomping grounds but those were pre-wine days.

The only LI stores I regularly shop at are Pops and Post. Pops is not really that area, but Post is in Syosset. I usually deal with Alan Marshok, a very knowledgable guy who has been in the business a long time, but staff in general is good. http://www.postwines.com/
I find their online site isn't really complete (or at least in past, stopped using it). But pretty wide selection. Good to be on their mailing list, some real bargains on their Jan inventory clearance

Hi Dan,
There’s Stew Leonard’s of Farmingdale, located at the old Republic facility, called Airport Plaza on Rt 110 just south of the tracks.

Post is the only one that I have shopped in in recent years, also shopped there when we lived in NYC..was a long time customer of Pop's but they are not near Syosset or Huntington..Post website usually not current..Selection not bad but not outstanding..Pop's has much better and wider selection..Frankly, not a lot at Post that you couldn't find in Siberacuse, Manlius, Dewitt or Fayetteville..ie,Liquor City, Liquor Square, Wine House, Deckers or Limestone..Empire in Albany has better and larger selection and better prices and they handle internet orders pretty well, ditto re Wine Library in New Jersey..In short, I think Post ok if I am in the area ..have family in Dix Hills and Melville, but nothing special.

Thanks folks. I picked up some Clos Roche Blanche Touraine at Post. This used to be readily available at the places I shop but not so much nowadays . While at Post I suddenly had a deja vu moment that this was the place where we bought booze as teenagers. It's much more up scale now. Stew Leonard's is a marvelous place. Lots of thoughtful selections at very good prices. Every town should have one. I bought too much - always the sign of a good wine shop.

Jon,
I'm surprised at this (not that I intimately know Post, or for that matter the others- WineLibrary is only one I shop at). I just looked at CT for what I've have bought in last few years at Post- lots of Drouhin (including Griottes, Petit Monts, Clos de Beze back to '79, etc- not negoce Gevrey), Trimbach (again, Hommage a Jeanne, SdR and CFE, not yellow label Riesling), Selbach Oster, Willi Schaefer, Huet, plus some random bottles of Figeac, Bachelet, Bonneau du Martray, Lafarge, Ogier, Gouges,de Villaine, etc. And a lot of Louis Dressner wines like Dan's CRB. I'd be totally shocked if I found that stuff in a place called Liquor City. I'm generally regarded as a cheap bastard, and don't buy unless prices are competitive, but Post is in my top 10 for last few years. That said, as noted website is not good, but I stop by there when nearby (couple times a year), plus buy at inventory clearance and occasional email blast.

Dan, the LI Stew's Wine sounds better than the Westchester one. I've stopped in the grocery, next time I'll try the wine store (I only get to LI few times a year)

I live on Long Island, and do almost no wine shopping here. I've bought a few things at Post, and a couple of time have attempted to get on their mailing list, but they haven't managed to put me on it so I don't see their sales unless they advertise them in The Times. I've been frustrated to see items on their website, only to find them out of stock when I stop into the store. The other place I used to shop is Bottles and Cases or Bottle Buys (same prices and same inventory), but, while they used to have bargains, lately they don't.

Hi Dan,
Glad you liked Stew Leonard’s. Did you get to go in the climate-controlled room? (Wines I can only dream about). There are quite a few fine wine shops on Long Island besides Pops of Island Park. We got Pope’s of Medford on Route 112, Crazy Billie’s of Deer Park on Deer Park Ave (Route 231), Frank’s of Central Islip on Carlton Ave, and Lake’s of Ronkonkoma on Hawkins Ave. Next time you spend a decent amount of time “Downstate” drop me a line.

Hi Diane,
That squares with my experience. Many empty shelf slots, only 4 bottles of the Clos Roche Blanche Touraine and no more in stock.

Dan.
