WTN: Torrontes and Oregon PN

by Dale Williams » Wed Oct 21, 2009 10:59 am

Betsy's back to work, since she had all day rehearsal I was in charge of dinner. Salmon and cucumbers in brown butter, brown rice, leeks braised in white wine, sugar snap peas. Cooking wine was the 2009 Goulart "T" Torrontes (not sure if the T is actually the name or just a graphic effect), Lemony citrus, good acidity, a bit herbal, with a surprising note of tannins- not a lot, but surprising to be there at all. Finish is a bit short, and after a while there's a funny medicinal note. Still, interesting if not compelling. B-

Dinner wine was the 2002 St Innocent "Seven Springs" Pinot Noir. I was afraid this might be infanticide, but it's actually drinking nicely. Black cherry fruit backed by tensile acids and resolving tannins. Lively, but also smooth and rich, with hints of chocolate and truffle. I really enjoy this, and am kicking myself for not buying more. A-

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

I took an 02 Seven Springs to Oregon two weeks ago and like you, was very pleased at how the 02's are doing. Wouldn't have opened it but that Bobo mistakenly pulled one of the 02 Andens (the larger Seven Springs vineyard was divided the year before into Seven Springs and Anden), by far the harder of the two early on, and it was drinking beautifully too. The year 2002 seems to mark a new age in St. Innocents, where they all drink better a little younger. No longer can you set your watch by these wines going to sleep at age 3-4 and not waking up until year 8 or so.
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov

Jenise, I've bought less St I recently (prices), but I think you're right. Not that it's a bad thing!

Thanks Alejandro, I'll look for those

Torrontes is great! One of my favourite white grapes since I discovered it a couple of years back. Lovely aromatics.
