Opinions on Daryl Groom wines?

by Dave R » Mon Oct 19, 2009 1:04 pm

Apparently, someone by the name of Daryl Groom is going to be in town pouring and selling his wines at a free tasting event. Does anyone know about his wines?

Thanks

Isn't he the Aussie, possibly formerly of Penfolds, who went to Geyser Peak? If so, is it GP he's pouring or has he gone solo?

I have only had one bottle of his Shiraz. I am not a fan of most of the Aussie Shiraz that one finds in the US market. Liked his and would buy more if it was ever available in my area. You can find info at groomwine.com or something like that.

Darryl is quite an accomplished winemaker, Dave. He's an Aussie who for several years was the chief winemaker for Penfold's (Grange Hermitage, now just Grange), then became the head winemaker for Geyser Peak in Sonoma.

He is especially highly regarded for producing good, dependable Sauvignon Blanc from Sonoma. Although I also like much of what he did with the red wine program for Geyser Peak (he and his team are adept at judicious blending for effect).

Plus, he's a super nice guy too. He'd be interested to talk/listen to, and you might find something interesting in his wines for your own enjoyment.

Edit add: Jenise, this is Darryl's brand alone, separate from GP.

I have a bottle of 2007 Groom Shiraz at home but I haven't had it or any of his wines. What I found interesting was the wine tasting note that came with the wine (via The California Wine Club) is that the winemaker recommends decanting this Shiraz for over 2 hours "for the flavors to properly develop". Seems like an overkill for a 2007 Shiraz.

Groom wines is joint venture between David and Jeanette Marschall and Daryl and Lisa Groom - its called Marschall Groom Cellars. They purchased something like 80+ acres of land near Kalimna, adjacent to Penfolds’ 130-year-old Kalimna Vineyard. Shiraz was planted in 1997 (first vintage in 1999) - its blended with material from vineyards some 50 years old. They also have a 20 acre vineyard in the Adelaide Hills appellation of Lenswood, planted with Sauvignon Blanc. There is also some Zin at the Kalimna site - first vintage I believe is 2006.

I have had several vintages of the Groom Shiraz and its a lovely wine that is around the mid-$20s. James Halliday rates there wiens very highly (its 5 star winery on his scale). The 2008 sauvignon blanc was the highest scoring Aussie SB from Halliday.

If I had the chance to taste with Daryl Groom I would jump at the chance.

I put out a bottle of Darryl's SB at the last cassoulet dinner. Really good juice.

I've been a big fan of Groom's shiraz, Dave, since the '01 release. Both '01 and '02 are in an awkward stage as of a 6months ago (or maybe my taste preference is moving away from Barossa). The bottles I have left are now part of the great Aussie aging expermiment.

Hi David! It definitely is nice, and comfortably nostalgic, poking around here.

As always, all of you hit the bulls-eye with your advice. I liked both Daryl* and his wines. I will post some brief notes when I return home.

*Hoke, Daryl spells his name with one R. I'm surprised a retired teacher would not pay closer attention to spelling. :P Everything you said though was very true.

I prefer what I call the Shakespearean method of spelling (random and creative). And I've spelled Mr. Groom's named in various ways just in these posts.

I have a very good friend of many years and when we communicate by e-mail, he never knows whether I'm going to call him "Daryl", "Darryl", "Darryll", or"Darrell". He has become inured to it. :D

Of course he does occasionally slip in a "Hoak" or "Holk" when he replies...

Dave, was Daryl being serious, or was he wearing his dumb Aussie cork hat? 8)
