Traveling to NZ - need help!

by Pat Carey » Mon Oct 19, 2009 9:28 am

My nephew and a friend are leaving for New Zealand in a week! In their early 20's, both are avid bikers. They biked across the US, from NJ to Seattle last summer camping and "Warm Showers" (group of kind-hearted homeowners providing hospitality to bikers). Then picked up and spent the winter in Alaska working at a resort (cleaning rooms and kitchens) so they could ski and snowboard in off time.

After working and saving all summer the Michaels are on the move again, flying into Auckland. Here is where the help request begins. Does anyone know of any storage place/lockers, where they can "board" the bike carriers while they travel?

They are looking to work while in NZ, any suggestions on where they should begin their search? They'd love to work in a vineyard, but are open to anything. They are 2 of the hardest working, most reliable kids I know! Any advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Pat
Hopefully Sue & Neil Courtney will chime in - they're likely to be a massive help, not just with their own local advice, but also potentially with other contacts.

I'm not sure if any vineyard work will be available - way too early for harvest, though I suspect there will be plenty of fruit picking opportunities out there.

They should have a great time out there, in what is often a very outdoors focused culture.

Thanks Ian,

I'm envious of their adventures. Luckily they blog and upload pictures so we can follow them on their travels!

No need to worry about anything in New Zealand. Most probably they can store some stuff in any backpackers hostel around New Zealand. Been there three times and the folks there are one of the most helpful, honest and hospitable people I`ve ever met around the world.

They are looking to work while in NZ, any suggestions on where they should begin their search?

They will get all their needed directions in the backpackers `scene` (hostels etc.).

They'd love to work in a vineyard

There should be some work in a vineyard, but I guess due to economics crisis (`n stuff) they might not have that much choice in work possibilities as they might have some years before, but in general, they should"at least" get a fruit picking/ farm hand job.

I'm envious of their adventures. Luckily they blog and upload pictures

A link would be nice ;)

New Zealand is great. Although I have to admit I missed the german prices for beer, wine and booze. ;);)

Thank you Richard,

They've safely arrived in NZ and I heard they have "linked" into the hostel system, so hopefully they are getting some of the answers to their storage and work questions. I haven't received word on their blog, but look forward to it. With each adventure their journaling and photos get better, so I can be an "armchair" traveler.
