WTN: 2006 Hewitson Old Garden Mourvedre

by Salil » Sun Oct 18, 2009 6:59 pm

$25 from HDH, under screwcap, 14.5% alcohol. From a parcel of old Mourvedre vines in the Barossa Valley that was planted in 1853.
I opened this in the afternoon, threw a third of the bottle into the decanter for a few hours (the rest stayed in the fridge) and had it alongside dinner; Chinese-style pork ribs that I did in the pressure cooker.

This is a really fantastic wine. Gorgeous aromatics of leather, musk and faint floral notes. The fruit is more forward in the mouth with ripe black cherry and plum flavours up front and a long, savoury earth and herb-laden finish. Everything's in perfect balance with the tannins and acid matched by the richness, and the alcohol hidden throughout. Great accompaniment for the ribs.

Any idea how much longer it is feasible to make wine from such vines?

And I assume the wine is 100% from these old vines?

Sounds nice.

Can't speculate/guess on how much longer those vines will keep producing. That said they won't be helped by the number of heatwaves and drought issues that have hit the Barossa Valley in recent years. I just hope they hold up a while longer as Dean Hewitson is making some fantastic wine from them (not to mention the prices are very reasonable.)

Re. the source, from what I understand the wine is entirely from that old vine parcel which is a couple of acres in size (and doesn't get replanted).

Sounds like a very good combination of factors.

It is unfortunate for us in this market that Hewitson is now a part of a huge umbrella of Auzzie wines that are imported and sold together. The local wholesaler changed here. The new wholesaler decided [i]NOT [i]to continue the wine in this market. It has always been one of my favorites.
