WTN: Dinner at Convivio, 4 good to excellent glasses

by Dale Williams » Thu Oct 15, 2009 3:10 pm

Last night we had our slightly belated anniversary dinner at Convivio in Tudor City in NYC. Excellent food, wine service (though I only ordered by the glass), and table service. The $59 4 course prix fixe is an extraordinary deal for a place of this caliber.

We had some fantastic olive bread, then Betsy had a couple of "sfizi" (eggplant rolled with ricotta, mushrooms with vin cotto) while I had the
quail with lentil puree and pickled mushrooms. The primi choices all looked good: I got rabbit ravioli with mushrooms, Betsy got a gnocchetti (like gnocchi not potato) with crab and sea urchin. Her secondi was lamb chops with beans and escarole, mine was a HUGE Berkshire pork chop with oyster mushrooms and "spigarelli" greens (lightly bitter, kind of broccoli rabe meets dandelion). She had a trio of sorbets, since I don't eat dessert they allowed me to substitute a pair of sfizi- crostini with chicken livers & marsala sauteed onions, and saffron risotto croquettes (they said I could have at start or end, I chose to have them while Betsy had dessert). Food ranged from very good to extraordinary, mostly the latter.

With this range of food, hard to choose a bottle, so I went with the thoughtful by the glass list, with some help from the sommelier. All were interesting:

2006 Mastroberardino "Radici " Fiano
Light, a little lean, floral, citrus, smoke. Fun and good. B

2006 Dettori Bianco
One of the "orange wines." Hazy, citrus, herbs, orange peel, tannins. A little nutty note but not overly oxidative, more like a Lopez de Heredia rose than a Radikon to my taste. Fun wine, I quite enjoyed. B+

2008 Tenuta delle Terre Nere Etna Rosso
Light, fresh, a little leafy/herby. Good acidity, nice if not as complex as the Biondi Etna (or maybe the upper end Terre Nere). In any case far better than any btg selection at 90% of NYC upper end restaurants. As a bonus, they gave me a little extra pour as I was running low trying to finish the huge pork chop. B

2005  Vestini Campagnano Pallagrello Nero
I believe Pallagrello Nero is the grape. Dark color, evident but supple tannins, dark berry fruit with a little herby/anise note. Very good match with rare lamb chops. Never hard of this, but will look for. A-/B+

Solid and interesting list, nice Schott Zweisel stems, all served at perfect temp.
One of the best nights I've had for a (non-vino-centric but vino-interesting) dinner for a long time. Pretip bill was $189, I'd call that extreme value for the level

PS Minor judgemental rant : Some friends recently attended a BYO lunch there, said wine service was superb. I can definitely see paying corkage for the kind of wines they served, but in general the wine list is so interesting here (and reasonably priced) I would generally just buy off list. While I try not to be too judgemental, I admit to wondering "what's the point" at a nearby table where they were drinking Aalto with the Winebid sticker still on it. Didn't seem to me to especially match food, just an odd choice (who knows, maybe sentimental reasons?).

Grade disclaimer: I'm a very easy grader, basically A is an excellent wine, B a good wine, C mediocre. Anything below C means I wouldn't drink at a party where it was only choice. Furthermore, I offer no promises of objectivity, accuracy, and certainly not of consistency.

Happy anniversary to you and Betsy, Dale. I always wanted to try Convivio as I hear they have a great offal menu, but Jill gets turned off by the thought of offal. I see from your dinner choices she will not have to go home hungry, so we will probably get there soon.

Dale,

Happy Anniversary to you and Betsy.

Also thanks for the Convivio report. It's one of the few gems near abouts my neighborhood and your post reminded me to dine there again as it's been almost a year since I last went. Did you happen to know, or ask, what their current corkage policy is?

Coincidence we were in NY last week and had dinner at Convivio on Friday. The food is very good , the wine list excellent, and the 4 course pre fixe a real bargain, especially a NY restaurant of that quality. Levi Dalton has put together a great wine list and is one of the most knowledgeable sommeliers I've met in a long time and without an ounce of pomposity. It probably helped we had an intro to Levi through SF Joe. We enjoyed the whole evening so much that we cancelled our reservation for another restaurant on Saturday and returned to Convivio for an equally fine experience. :D

Jacques,
I believe Levi is the sommelier at Convivio.
I'm usually Mr Offal, other than chicken liver I don't remember seeing any (wait, is uni sea offal?!?!?).
We don't normally go out much for Italian, preferring to be more adventurous, but this was quite adventurous without Betsy once thinking she could do (or improve) a dish.

Ramon,
I didn't ask but think I heard $35 at some point. Not sure if they would want an offline, they were totally filled on a Wed. I think Mark and crew with couple of dozen wines like 37 Clos Vougeot, 52 and 89 LMHB, etc negotiated a flat fee for lunch (and were delighted), not sure that would work for dinner (but maybe there's a private room). But for dinner with my wife, not a place I'd carry a bottle - unless you have 68 Radici Riserva or 71 Giacosa, why? There are cool reds (and the great Sella rosato) for under $50 (or fairly priced at $100 or $150)that are designed to match the food. Just my $.02

Lou,
glad you liked it!
Next time let the NY WLDG crowd have a shot at entertaining you

Dale - Happy Anniversary to you and Betsy.

I love Convivio (and before that,L'Impero), and when we went to dinner there last year, the corkage policy was $35 with a 1 bottle limit.

Say whot, Lou. We had dinner at Convivo last Fri night as well. Harumph...I thought I was the only famous person there that night.
So did you intentionally ignore me???
Terrific meal we had. I asked Levi if he knew ShellyLindgren (A16 wine somm & part owner). He replied "Sure...we stole her wine list"!!

Dale,
That olive bread is absolutely terrific. In fact Susan asked if she could have a loaf to take home and no problemo. Great eatin' that weekend.

Could it have been intentional? Nah! I'll mingle with the common people when necessary.
Makes you think, was there a secret meeting of obscure wine geeks at Convivio last Friday?

This retelling misconstrues a conversation in a way that I think is untrue to what was said, and also unfair.

As I mentioned at the time, I do not know Shelley Lindgren. Nor have I ever been to A16.

Belated happy anniversary to Dale and Betsy.
From Dale's post:

Ouch! That hurts! I carried a bottle of Aalto to an offline in DC over Labor Day but we didn't get around to opening it because the restaurant was charging for corkage and we had enough other bottles from BYOB and two ordered from the restaurant wine list. I really liked the one Aalto I tried in a wine shop in Charlotte and while it is not an Italian wine, I can see it with the rabbit ravioli or lamb chops.

Levi,
welcome and thanks for offering such a nice list and service.

JC,
my point wasn't anti-Aalto. Not really my style, but I have nothing against people drinking it, and wouldn't see anything wrong with someone taking it to a restaurant where they thought it an improvement over the restaurant's wine list. I could see it as something someone could bring to a Spanish or a no-theme offline. But here you have a place with a top-flight wine program- very well-chosen list, with hundreds of choices ranging from $30 to $500/bottle. I just don't see why someone would bring Aalto for a date night to Convivio. Why not just drink a $40 bottle of Aglianico? I realize that I am being a bit judgemental, and maybe there is some sentimental reason - they had Aalto on their first date, or he plays the alto sax. Offlines aside (a different situation), I take my own wine to restaurants because:
1) the restaurant has a poor list (or I guess maybe an outrageously overpriced list)
2) the restaurant has a young list, and I felt like mature wine (and I have a lot)
3) I have something really special and unusual, that I think would go well with the food (usually regionally related)
4) sentimental reasons, either the wine itself or maybe the vintage

Maybe #4, but can't see the first three in this case.

Just don't get carried away and let your head enlarge in size. Remember one of your great attributes is a total lack of pomposity as I explained. If you became spoiled SF Joe would never forgive me. I will be sending other friends who are not so easy to get along with as I am.

Maybe I'll hold off on that Stetson purchase, however.

No, go ahead, you'll need it. The next big trend in NYC dining- the Spaghetti Western restaurant. Ennio Morricone music, sommeliers in Stetsons, waiters in sombreros, bistecca alla fiorentina the featured dish.

Jacques,

I am probably picking at nits here, but I do think the word "offal" has a distinct off-putting connotation to it. Checking http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/offal One sees why it might be off-putting. If referred to as organ meat, or variety meat I believe more people would be more open minded about eating it. Of course, there are probably more people who do not like liver than there are that do, so like I said, I am probably picking at nits.
