WTN: 2005 Robert Eymael-Monchhof Riesling QbA

by Dave Moritz » Fri Aug 11, 2006 12:41 am

Mosel-Saar-Ruwer; 9.5% alc.; Rudi Wiest/Cellars International; $14; screw cap closure.

Fairly subdued nose with just a hint of pineapple. Quite "zingy" on the attack, a surprisingly rich palate for a QbA, and enough acidity to back it all up. Predominantly peach flavors with a bit of lime thrown in. There must be some RS in here somewhere. No defects. All in all, a fine sipper that bodes well for the 2005 vintage in much of Germany. I'd give it a fair score for QPR; it probably can be had for less than the $14 I paid.

'05 looks like a very good year for Eymael. I tasted the '05 Mosel Slate (Erdener Treppchen) and the Urziger Wurzgarten Kabinett and Spatlese, and they are all excellent wines.

David:
Thanks for the additional recommendations. I've heard that Selbach-Oster also made some very good wines in 2005 and that the estate is a neighbor of Monchhof. Have you tried any Selbach-Oster, and is there a geographic proximity?
Thanks.

Selbach and Monchof are a few klicks apart on the Middle Mosel. I have tried 10-12 2005 Selbach-Oster wines, and they are outstanding as a group.

I think the QbA is probably what I tasted by the glass at a restaurant in Chapel Hill and posted on May 21st. I liked it and got the delicate peach flavor that you mention also. That may have been my first 2005 German wine.
