Pronunciation of "Gruet"?

One of our Louisville foodies (Hi, Jay!) just asked about the pronunciation of the New Mexico sparkling wine, and just as I was mindlessly responding, "'Groo-ay,' of course," it occurred to me that I don't know this with certainty.

So, experts, what'sit? "Groo-ay" or "Groo-ett" or something else?

"We each ordered a glass of Gruet Blanc de Noirs ($7), which is a lovely sparkling wine. I was kind of put off when our waiter pointedly "corrected" my pronunciation (Groo-ay) and said, "OK, two glasses of the Groo-ett, then?" (He would commit the same faux pas again, when I ordered a bottle of '01 Domaine Joblot Givry ($55) and he would "correct" me to Give-ree.)"
A browse through their website does not give a pronunciation, however, the name is based on a French family name. So this would exclude using a local pronunciation, as there are many of those.

When a windery rep poured it at a tasting I went to a couple of years ago he pronounced it Groo-et.

Yes, it's most definitely Groo-et.

At an upscale wine bar in Sante Fe local folks called it 'Groo-ay".

Served it cold and delicious as well.

Same on all three counts at Inn at Loretto. Geronimo Restaurant.

For what it's worth. Like Howie, I don't see any winery pronunciation help online or on the labeling. But it's the same family that established Gruet in France in the 50s.

Of course there is then the question of...why does it really matter...it's inexpensive, decent sparkling wine, not anything worth talking about in any detail.

Yes, but it really is my honest assessment of Gruet. I have never been remotely impressed.

I am dissapointed when you are wrong

My order for sparkling stuff taking into price and taste, guess that is QPR
1- Prosecco
2- Gruet
3- Loire sparklers
4- vintage Champagne (expensive but the best)
5- NV Champagne (not worth $40 IMHO)

At the winery's tasting room in Albuquerque, it's "Groo-ay." The founding family hails from Champagne, BTW.

And, for final confirmation, I waited until business hours in New Mexico, called the winery, and spoke to the gentleman in the tasting room. It is, indeed, "Gru-ay."

Gee, "Gru" and "Groo" sound the same to me -- no wonder my reading French is so superior to my hearing French. :(

David, I wish I had read this prior to asking you in another thread if you had had any of the Gruet sparklers. Apparently you have, and you have dismissed them as not having any worth.

No problem Bob. I just really do not like them at all.

By the way, part of my disdain stems from some "beat the Champagnes" stuff that came out in local papers years ago. It reminded me of the LI Merlot beats Petrus, and I hate that type of stuff. It's almost always bogus for one reason or another.
