I seem to be on a Grenache roll these past few weeks so thought I would open this one up for some visiting dressage riders from Chile who are visiting town. Spainish speaking so some relevance here!!
WTN: `02 Garnacha Baltasar, Aragon.
Opened for 4 hrs but not decanted. 14% alc. This wine seems to be readily available in some of the better stores, have just seen the `03 vintage.
Colour. Deep rich dark garnet and nice viscousity, no sign of age on the watery rim.
Nose. Tried this with 3 different wine glasses, interesting exercise! Cherry, anise, hint of oak. With aeration some plum and raspberry, blackberry too. One taster found it floral and chocolate (the thin copita glass). Just a funky aroma if one stuck the nose right in...."olor fundo!!". Farmhouse smell!! Well, she rides horses.
Palate. Not a lot of change in the glass over 2 hours, maybe as a result of the glass (or two) of pisco floating around!! We all found black pepper, silky tannins, licorice, jammy black fruits. Bit new world maybe but can see the attraction of this garnacha. Black cherry and blackberry to the forefront here.
Long lingering finish alto` wine did become a tad herbal with time. "Sweet with lots of fruit" was my better halfs comment as she swished away! I like this wine a lot and have some other wines from this area I must pull.
Cost was $20.00 Cdn
Food, beef skewers marinaded in mild thai sauce.
